📈The reality of progress is that it is not a straight linear path. You are not going to feel fit, muscular, or skinny every day. Some days you’re going to feel unfit, scrawny, or fat. You will feel great one day and terrible the next. This is simply a reality.

😫This constant up and down progression is what throws most people off of their goals. They get frustrated and feel as if they are not making any progress. The process is progress. Trust it.

🛣All that you can do is stay on the path and get a little bit better each day. Fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to build muscle. It takes time to lose fat. It takes time to feel and look better.

🙅What you cannot allow to happen is for a bad day to completely derail all of your progress. Don’t throw in the towel and negate all of your gains by giving up for a week. Maintain the course. Remember the days that you do feel good and come back to them on the days that you don’t.

💪You got this. Push through the lows and cherish the highs. If it was easy, then everyone would be fit with 6 pack abs and killer buns.

These three things are so important in life but are not given, they are earned.

1. A fit body
2. A calm mind
3. A house full of love

It goes without saying that a fit body is earned. It takes years of work and healthy living to achieve true fitness. To earn fitness that shows on the outside, as far as muscles and such, it takes much more discipline.

A calm mind is a tough concept. Many of us struggle with things like depression or anxiety that are often out of our control. However, with the right medications and support, these things become easier to manage. Each of us is different and requires different things to feel at ease in our own mind and our own skin. Figure out what allows you to feel calm and content, then hold on to that.

In order to have a house full of love you have to give love. It takes some opening up and risk to have loving relationships. Building a family and raising kids takes a great deal of love and patience. You will not receive love if you don’t give it out yourself.

Accountability, commitment, and writing down one’s goal makes success over 33% more likely. A recent study demonstrated that writing down goals, creating action commitments to each goal, and sharing them with others accounted for much greater success rates.

Simply thinking about a goal that you want to accomplish was not enough. Within the study, less than half of those in this group accomplished their goals, or were at least half way there.

Moral of the story…write you goals down, create action plans to achieve them, and share them with others. These three effective coaching tools are: accountability, commitment, and writing down one’s goals. Start using them if you want to achieve your dreams and aspirations

Many of us likely have things we want to do or hope to do. However, it is difficult to make them a reality if we never actually write it down and look at it. Writing it down and sharing it with others puts it out into the world. This makes it feel real and you’ll be more likely to follow through.

🧐Studies show that only 8% of Americans who make a New Year’s resolution actually keep them all year and 80% will have failed by the start of February.

👉You can look at this one of two ways. One, most people who make New Year’s resolutions fail. Or two, although only 8%, there are people who keep their resolutions the entire year…so it is possible.

The reason most of these resolutions fail is that they are simply not sustainable. You have to set goals that are realistic and achievable. If you’ve never worried about your diet before, then it is unlikely you’re going to suddenly only eat whole foods come the new year. If you’ve never worked out before, it is unlikely that you’re suddenly going to workout every day in 2021.

🎬Instead, start smaller and choose something that is attainable and easier to maintain. For instance, maybe decide that you’re going to eliminate liquid calories next year (pop, juice, etc.). Or perhaps you could make a goal to do 30 minutes of exercise 3 days per week for starters.

🔐Consistency is the key. And choosing something you can be consistent with will yield better results. After you’ve established some new habits, then you can start thinking about bigger goals and aspirations.

🎁The best gift that you can give yourself this Christmas will not be under the tree. It is your fitness. Treat yourself to some health and wellness this holiday. There is no better time than the holiday season to start setting some fitness goals.

💯However, the difference needs to be that these goals are attainable and maintainable. Too often people set unrealistic expectations and “New Year’s Resolutions. This almost always ends in failure. Start slow. Work your way into bigger changes. Begin with something that you can do right away. What is one thing that you can change? What type of fitness regime will you maintain?

🚨50% of all young Americans (12-21) are not vigorously active! 🚨

Can you believe that? That is insane. 14% report NO physical activity at all and young females are actually less active than males. Also, participation in all types of physical activity declines strikingly as age or grade in school increases.

These are some crazy numbers and it is no wonder that obesity and other chronic diseases are becoming such a problem in America. It is estimated that the prevalence of obesity in America is over 40%.

We need to start instilling in our youth the benefits of physical activity, especially during this time of quarantines and lock downs. Our society is in grave risk of creating negative habits that will be difficult to overcome when all of this is lifted. It is vitally important to make it a priority to get up and move.

Make physical activity a part of your day. Create a positive habit now and encourage your children to do the same.

Think about this one for a bit…Failure is an essential prerequisite for success.

That is a powerful statement. In order to succeed you must fail. Have you ever thought of it that way? Most people just think of achieving success. We envision hard work, consistency, and discipline driving us to our goal. But do we imagine failures, in fact, multiple failures along the way? Do we have a plan for addressing and moving on from failure?

More on this in a future post as I discuss some of the research behind this. It is being found that those that fail and fail more often, end up being the successful ones.
